Locking down a Mac

Hey there
I’m considering getting a Mac and wonder about the different layers of restrictions for it. The Mac wouldn’t be my main computer, that would still be my iPad, which is already well locked. The Mac would really just be a utility for the processes an iPad can’t do, but I don’t envision needing the admin password for the Mac once I’ve got it set up with the apps I need. I can put this admin password physically away from me, but wondering if a non-admin user account would be sufficiently locked down then (if possible to enforce DNS and the like)?
I wonder if you might be able to let me know?
Thanks
